Transposing
It is incredibly useful to know how to transpose music from bass to treble, or treble to bass, or just be able to look at and read both. Many times you will encounter a piece where the parts are only in bass clef. Pieces that only include a treble clef part do exist, but are not as common.
To transpose treble clef music into bass clef music, you simply take the key in the treble clef, and add two flats. You then take all of the notes and raise them a fifth, or 7 half steps. The tricky part is when accidentals come in. due to the difference in the marked keys, a flat accidental can turn into a natural, or a natural into a sharp. Just look at the note with the accidental marked and look to see if the accidental lowers it a full step or a half step, or if the accidental raises the note a full or half step. Look at the note on your partially transposed note, and alter it the amount of half steps and full steps that the accidentals alter it in treble clef.
For transposing from bass clef to treble clef, just reverse these directions.
